The Housing Crisis

Our clients

In recent weeks GEDCO has seen the effects of an escalating housing crisis. Many people are losing their houses and being pushed into the rental market. Consequently, demand increases for rental units and costs rise beyond what some can afford. We have also heard the heart breaking stories of renters, unaware that their landlords foreclosed on their property, being left to look for a new home in a tough market.

Many of our residents previously lived in sub-standard housing, believing they could not afford or else find suitable housing. Our CARES clients now range from the very poor and unemployed to working class citizens (and non-citizens) who have been unable to make ends meet on their own due to rising food and energy costs.

What GEDCO does

At CARES, we provide mortgage, rent and security deposit assistance to clients from a wide range of backgrounds, requiring basic proof of need. We do not verify income because we recognize that working class people are also in need of assistance. We do require a court notice for rent assistance, a copy of the lease for security deposit assistance or a past due statement for mortgage assistance. These things help to ensure we meet the needs of clients who are facing emergency situations.

We have seen a significant increase in the number of clients requesting rent or mortgage assistance. We provide $200 to each client (and can offer it again in 6 months.) Though the amount might seem small, with it clients are able to catch up on their bills and stabilize their housing. Assistance can often secure another month for a client to access resources to find a permanent solution to their emergency needs.
